The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, or the IIHS as it’s more commonly abbreviated, tightened its criteria for earning the titles of Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ this past year, but the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander still managed to earn the “+” rating – the highest possible honor offered by the organization. The Outlander recently underwent a major overhaul that earned the attention of both consumers and experts alike, and the improvements made to the SUV’s safety systems have now earned some recognition as well.

In previous model years of the Outlander, advanced safety features were only available in higher trim levels or in the form of optional packages, but the 2016 Outlander comes standard with systems like Active Stability Control, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Brake Assist, and Anti-lock Brakes. What earned the vehicle the Top Safety Pick+, however, was the addition of an available Forward Collision Mitigation feature, which is now required by the IIHS for all vehicles who hope to attain the ‘Plus’ title.

Other optional safety features offered in the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander include Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, and rain-sensing wipers, among others. Mitsubishi attributes the title of Top Safety Pick+ to the amount of effort and attention to detail that went into the new model year, making it better than any of its predecessors.
