How Does the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Work?

The popular 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has a unique drivetrain composed of a front-mounted 2.0-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors, one in the front and one aft. Outlander PHEV can automatically select among three different modes for best efficiency and performance.

Drivetrain Modes

The three PHEV drivetrain modes are:

  • EV Mode: Two electric motors drive the vehicle, powered by the lithium-ion-drive battery pack. In this mode, Outlander is a 100% electric, zero-emission vehicle, a great choice for daily errands.
  • Series Hybrid Mode: In this mode, the battery pack that powers the electric motors receives additional energy generated by the gasoline engine. The engine augments the electric motors and replenishes the battery without directly driving the wheels. Series mode is handy when you need sudden acceleration.
  • Parallel Hybrid Mode: The engine powers the front wheels with additional power when needed from the electric motors. Any excess power from the engine is fed back to the battery pack. This mode is perfect for highway cruising or when the battery is depleted.

Although drivetrain modes are automatically selected, you can manually set the system to Battery Charge Mode to charge the battery from the engine, which takes about 40 minutes to achieve 80% capacity. Alternatively, you can set the system to Battery Save Mode to save the battery and rely on the gasoline engine. You can also choose EV Priority or Eco Mode for reducing fuel and electricity usage when possible but deactivates when you need extra power.

Charging

In addition to Level 1 and Level 2 charging, Outlander PHEV is the first plug-in hybrid equipped with DC Fast Charging that provides 80% capacity in 25 minutes from a CHAdeMO charging station. DC Fast Charging is fast and efficient when you are away from home.

To increase charging efficiency, Outlander PHEV features regenerative braking. When coasting or braking, the system converts kinetic energy into electricity that charges the battery. You can increase or reduce coasting to your liking via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The Outlander instrument panel conveniently displays the charging status so that you know your driving range as you charge . The 7-inch touchscreen displays in real time your EV power usage, battery capacity from regenerative braking, energy flow through the system, and your average mpg.
