It’s been more than a decade since an entirely new Mitsubishi SUV appeared but the all-new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander was definitely worth the wait. The all-new Outlander is something of a rarity as it’s one of only a very few compact crossover SUVs to offer a third-row seat that takes its people-carrying capacity up to seven. The new exterior is classic, rugged, no-nonsense SUV but with a modern twist of signature Mitsubishi styling, and there’s more room inside than you’d ever expect to find in a vehicle classified as compact.
There are several things about the all-new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander that are hard to believe. The first thing that’s hard to believe is how a vehicle classed as a compact SUV can so comfortably accommodate up to seven people, and the second is how a vehicle as stylish, capable and versatile as this can be sold for such affordable prices. The first model in the 2022 Outlander family is the 2.5 ES and a lot of buyers will be more than happy to go with this entry model as it delivers big in so many ways for what really is a very small price. If you do want to spend a little more, the rest of the family is made up of the 2.5 SE, 2.5 SEL, SE Tech, and the top-of-the-line Outlander SEL Touring.
Even a model rated as a compact needs a decent engine if it’s going to be asked to carry up to seven people and their belongings and the engine Mitsubishi has decided to drop into its all-new Outlander is more than up to the job. The unit in question is a new 2.5-liter inline-four that develops a very symmetrical 181 horsepower and 181 lb.-ft. of torque which is sent to the front or all four wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that boasts eight pre-programmed ratios.
Front-wheel drive is standard across the range with all-wheel drive available for all five trim levels, but both drivetrains come with driver-selectable modes. Standard front-drive models get five models, while AWD versions of the Outlander get six, which are Eco, Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow, and Mud.
If you just look at the standard equipment list of the entry-level ES trim you’ll wonder how it could possibly be classed as a base model, especially for such an attractive price. Standard ES features include 7-passenger seating, 18-inch alloy wheels, Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Rear Automatic Emergency Braking, push-button start, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, front USB ports, an 8-inch Smartphone Link Display Audio, Bluetooth wireless technology, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Models from the SE upwards all include the likes of wireless Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, synthetic suede or leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, and plenty more besides.
The all-new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is going to set a new standard in the compact crossover SUV segment and it’s a standard that will be hard for the competition to match, never mind beat.
