It’s hard to believe that it’s now been more than a decade since we last saw the launch of an entirely new Mitsubishi SUV, but the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was certainly worth the wait and the competition had better take note. Not only is the Outlander now offered in plug-in-hybrid form, but it’s also something of a rarity as one of only a handful of compact crossover SUVs with an available third-row seat to accommodate up to seven people. On the outside, the Outlander PHEV is a classic, rugged, no-nonsense SUV but with a large dose of contemporary Mitsubishi styling, and it’s also more spacious inside than a compact has any right to be.
If you assume you need an SUV classed as large or full-size instead of compact, then the all-new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV should make you think again. It’s hard to believe how a vehicle officially classed as a compact crossover SUV can accommodate up to seven people as comfortably as this, and it’s even harder to understand how a vehicle that’s as stylish, capable, and versatile as this can cost so relatively little. There are three versions of the Outlander PHEV to choose from which are the entry-level 2.4 SEL, the mid-range 2.4 LE, and the top-of-the-range 2.4 GT.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV may be a compact offering but any vehicle capable of accommodating up to seven people needs a suitable powerplant that’s up to the task. All three versions of the Outlander PHEV come equipped with a powerful and efficient 2.4-liter internal combustion engine that develops 126 hp and 148 lb.-ft. of torque that is combined with a rear-axle-mounted 70kW electric motor. This all means that the combined, total system output of the 2022 Outlander PHEV is now 221 hp, which is an impressive 31 horsepower more than its predecessor.
The Outlander PHEV’s main drive battery capacity has also now increased from the 12.0 kW/h to a 13.8 kW/h unit, and that means there’s also an increase of all-electric range from 22 to 24 miles, and the top speed during all-electric operation has jumped from 79 mph to 83 mph. All three versions of the Outlander PHEV also come standard with Mitsubishi’s S-AWC all-wheel-drive system.
All three trim levels come with generous levels of standard features and equipment, but there are significant differences between the three grades that easily justify the different prices. Entry-level SEL versions come with 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, leather-appointed seating surfaces, HD Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, front and rear USB ports, a power remote liftgate, dual-zone climate control, and an 8.0-inch Smartphone-link Display Audio system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
LE models add the likes of the Mitsubishi Power Sound System, an extra two speakers, synthetic suede seating surfaces with red stitching, and a set of dark chrome 18-inch alloy wheels. Go for a range-topping GT model and you can then enjoy upscale features such as LED low and high beam lights, LED fog lights, diamond-quilted leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, premium black gloss interior accents, a multi-view camera system, and adaptive cruise control.
The all-new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a standout model in the compact crossover SUV segment for its style, value for money, and its impressive capability, but it takes things to another level with a plug-in-hybrid powerplant that also delivers combined fuel economy ratings of 74 MPGe and 26 MPG.
